Developmental Editing 

Developmental editing is the first step in the editing process, and it solves the big-picture storytelling issues in your manuscript.
The Developmental Editing service addresses the following issues:​
  • theme
  • story structure
  • characters (goals, motivations, conflict, character development)
  • point of view
  • pacing
  • setting/timeline
  • genre conventions/expectations
  • scene vs narrative summary (show vs tell)
  • dialogue
It does not address line editing or copyediting issues such as grammar, spelling or punctuation.

The service includes:
  • a marked-up manuscript with margin suggestions (comments) in Microsoft Word
  • an editorial report full of editorial feedback as a Microsoft Word document
  • 30 minutes of follow-up support over email or Google Meet*

​*Don’t worry if you're anxious about face-to-face communication. ​If you prefer, I will turn off the video function, and we'll talk as if we are having a telephone conversation.

Disclaimer: I will not rewrite or delete large parts of your manuscript. If necessary, I will demonstrate in a separate Word document how to revise a scene to illustrate a specific principle.
