   About me and my services

  • I'm a reliable and supportive developmental editor and beta reader for romance stories.

  • I provide honest, thoughtful, and actionable suggestions to help edit and improve the big-picture issues of your romance story. I  address the strengths and weaknesses of your manuscript and help you improve your writing skills (for your next books).

  • I do my best to improve your manuscript and I respect your manuscript, privacy and confidentiality.

  • I'm not using  generative AI to edit or beta read your manuscript. I don't accept AI-generated manuscripts.

Problems I can help you solve

  • Are you struggling with the plot of your story and can’t figure out what happens next? I can show you how to solve plot issues in your story.

  • Are you struggling to create believable and unique characters with realistic goals, motivations and flaws? I can show you how to create believable, realistic and relatable characters in the story you are editing right now.

  • Do you provide too much information/exposition that slows down the pacing of the chapters, and readers lose interest in the story? I can show you how to identify unnecessary information and quicken the pacing of your story.

  • Are you struggling to show the romantic chemistry and advance the development of the romantic relationship between the main characters? I can read your manuscript and show you how to develop the romantic relationship between the main characters.
I provide thoughtful, helpful and actionable suggestions to help you improve and edit the big-picture issues, such as:
  • theme
  • plot
  • characters (goal, motivation, conflict, character development)
  • point of view
  • pacing
  • setting
  • romance genre conventions
  • scene vs narrative summary (show vs tell)
  • exposition (info-dumping)
  • dialogue
"...her feedback was invaluable, especially after I had completed numerous revisions and was struggling to pinpoint where my plot issues were. I appreciated the chance to have a new and unbiased set of eyes on my manuscript. She pointed out an issue with a subplot that I had not considered before, which helped me to focus my revision efforts effectively. Her feedback was timely and thoughtful, and I'd recommend her to any fellow authors..."
Kate Underwood, contemporary romance writer

"I first engaged Maria’s services for a partial discovery evaluation of my fantasy romance novel when I had written around three quarters of it, and later returned for a full evaluation once the manuscript was finished. Both experiences were excellent.
Maria was professional, insightful, and always on time with her feedback. Her comments were thoughtful and very helpful in strengthening the manuscript and clarifying key elements of the story.
She also scheduled both follow-up calls very quickly after delivering the evaluations, and we went through all of my questions while she helped me brainstorm ideas for the next steps.
I highly recommend Maria to any author looking for thorough, professional, and genuinely helpful editorial feedback."
First-time indie author (pre-publication)

                      Heat/spice levels

I beta read and edit romance stories with the following heat/spice levels:
  • Wholesome or clean romance (no sex on and off page, only meaningful glances, physical activities are limited e.g kissing)
  • Sweet romance (light-hearted romance without explicit sex content, sex behind closed doors where at least one intimate scene happens but without the reader present)
  • Sensual romance (at least one intimate scene where sex happens on the page with euphemist, mild or flowery language, no sexually explicit language)
  • Steamy romance (explicit sexual language, at least two intimate scenes)

                     Content warnings

I don't beta read or edit romance books that extensively and explicitly discuss and focus on the following themes:
  • Illnesses, diseases, mental health disorders and suicide
  • death of family members and friends, and depiction of grief and loss
However, it's fine if these topics are discussed or mentioned throughout the story as long as the development of the romantic relationship between the main characters remains at the centre of the story (it is a romance after all!)
"... I couldn't be happier with the feedback she gave... her suggestions were very valuable and I hope to use her again."
Pamela Dean, romance comedy writer
